Forklifts or lift trucks are powered industrial trucks which are usually utilized in the moving and lifting of supplies for different applications. These types of equipment are normally utilized in the dockside, warehousing, construction and mining applications.

Depending on their uses, the forklift could be called by many different names. Several different examples of these names are: fork trucks, trailer loaders, lift trucks and stacker trucks. These machines are utilized throughout the globe, mostly in the warehousing and manufacturing industry.

In the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the first forklifts made their debut during the construction of the Pennsylvania railroad during the year 1906. At that time, platform trucks were introduced to help in the transportation of products. These first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity in WWI when extreme labor shortages happened due to all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts truly arrived on the market to stay.

There are essentially 2 main kinds of forklift: those dealing with heavy loads and those that could handle light loads. The light units comprise: towing tractors, side loaders, hand pallet trucks and walkie starters. These kinds of machinery are made for handling lighter loads and they are not suitable for really heavy cargo. The specific load capacity of the machinery is posted in the owner's handbook and on the machinery itself. Several examples of the big truck types comprise: walkie order picking trucks, truck mounted forklifts and telescopic handlers.

On the market today, there are numerous models of forklifts available. Each can provide different load capacities. Most of the time within warehouse applications, the lighter units is utilized. Bigger units are often seen within the shipping industry. Some units have a tilting mast to make the load bend so as to counteract any slipping.

Most forklift models with have rear steering wheels as this particular design aspect helps to increase the maneuverability of the equipment. Additionally, this steering manner comes in very helpful when operating around corners. These machinery could be unstable because of their changing centers of gravity. It is a wise idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Specialized forklifts are yet another kind. These machinery include articulated counterbalance trucks and explosion proof trucks. The explosion proof trucks are utilized within factories and environments that deal with flammable supplies.
