Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by big industrial batteries that have to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety measures must be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow things like matches or lighters to be used while an employee is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
