Fort McMurray remains a designation utilized by Canada Post for mail delivery within this area. Fort McMurray is a multicultural community, and it draws people from all walks of life. Most of the migrants within the city are Albertans, followed by 17 percent of individuals for Labrador and Newfoundland province.

The Cree peoples were the very first known settlers of Fort McMurray. The Cree were the most dominant First Nations people in the area and it was believed that they normally used the oil sands in order to waterproof their canoes. The first explorer from Europe of the area was Peter Pond, who came to the region to search for fur. The explorer, Alexander MacKenzie made the first recorded description of the oil sands in the year 1790, and by that time, the Crees and explorers were already taking place between them. The community has played a key part in the history of the petroleum industry in Canada, as oil exploration has been in existence in the region for as early as the 20th Century.

Snowboarders and thrill-seekers will also enjoy a downhill playground with half-pipe boxes within the park.

The city depends on its natural gas and oil pipelines, forestry and also tourism aside from oil. The two largest organizations within the region are the sand mining Syncrude and Suncor Energy businesses.
