Moose Jaw

The city of Moose Jaw, Saskatoon is located within the south-central part of Saskatchewan along the Moose Jaw River. The city's inhabitants are called Moose Javians. To the east of the city, about 77 kilometers away, is Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan. Regina is easily accessible via the Trans-Canada Highway, that conveniently runs right through the municipality of Moose Jaw. The municipality of Moose Jaw is recognized as being tourist and retirement friendly.

Initially, the municipality was named "Moose Jaw Bone Creek" by John Palliser in the year 1857. There are two common theories regarding how Palliser chose a name. The first theory is that, when looking at a map, the shape of the Moose Jaw River resembles the jaw of a moose. The second is that the name is derived from the Plains Cree name "moscastani-sipiy", which means a "a warm place by the river." The Coteau Range protects the river valley from the weather. The Plains Cree word Moose Jaw translates to "warm breezes".

Though Moose Jaw is mainly an industrial centre, Canada's military air show flight demonstration team, the Snowbirds, is located within the municipality. The business district is recognized for its beautiful historical murals which are painted on the exterior of some buildings. The city of Moose Jaw likewise serves as a railway junction for the area's agricultural produce. Several of the small grain elevators that formerly lined the highway are being replaced by big capacity concrete grain terminals. Since the technology becomes more advanced in the fields of harvest, transport, and road construction, huge inland terminals have become more economically viable. Due to the cities proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway. quite a few meat-processing plants, salt, potash, urea fertilizer, anhydrous ammonia and ethanol producers could be found in close proximity to Moose Jaw.

There are numerous main places of interest within the municipality, like for instance Temple Garden's Mineral Spa, the Tunnels of Moose Jaw (that are tours of the tunnels used to smuggle alcohol during the prohibition), and the History of Transportation Western Development Museum. Trolley tours of the municipality are still provided by Moose Jaw Trolley Company, that has been existing ever since 1912. Just outside of the municipality are the roadside attractions of Moose family, Mac the Moose and Capone's car. Other highlights of the municipality of Moose Jaw are CFB Moose Jaw, that is a NATO flight training school, and the geothermal spa.

Moose Jaw No. 161 is the governing body of the city of Moose Jaw. Around 1,228 inhabitants, including individuals from the nearby Canadian Forces Base, depend on their services.

The city has only one indoor shopping centre called the Town 'N' Country Mall. Them mall supports numerous independent grocery stores and retailers, like for instance the Real Canadian Superstore, Co-Op, Safeway Inc, Giant Tiger, Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Sobeys, The Brick, Staples, MKarr's Furniture, Shoppers Drug Mart, Mark's Work Warehouse, PartSource, London Drugs, Dollar Giant, Liquidation World, Home Hardware, Peavey Mart, Castle Building Centres Group and Western Lumber, and Liquidation World.
