Located on Lake Ontario's shoreline, the city of Oshawa is the biggest community within the Regional Municipality of Durham. The name of Oshawa originates from the Ojibwa, that means "the crossing place." The are was originally a transfer point utilized for the fur trade, a place where furs were loaded at the Oshawa harbor, and delivered to the trading posts along the mouth of the Credit River.

The trails around Oshawa providing the city's visitors and residents an opportunity to see the beauty of the culture, parks and natural resources. The Oshawa valleys and Harmony Creek have greeneries and arable land which is more typically found within the southern valleys of Ontario. Excellent places surrounding the city to visit and discover native plants comprise Jack in the Pulpit, Horsetrail, and Ostrich Fern. Donevan Recreation Complex consists of an arena for skating, public swimming and an indoor pool. Farewell Park provides the opportunity for everyone to play basketball together with friends, watch softball games throughout summer evenings, and have a picnic or play on the playground. McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve, which was maintained and operated by General Motors of Canada, has a number of walking trails which include Dogwood Trail meant to offer interpretive opportunities for the visually impaired. Lakeview Park is the location for the Oshawa Community Museum's nineteen-century homes. The Canadian Automotive Museum features more than 70 vehicles in an authentic 1920's car dealership. The museum gives a first-hand look at military hardware, tanks, scout cars, photos, letters, medals, certificates and various military memorabilia from WWII.

Oshawa Fiesta Week is a yearly, week-long celebration which occurs every June. The Festival features a fantastic parade, providing cultural entertainment and ethnic cuisine. This particular festive event is organized by the Oshawa Folk Arts Council, and it brings camaraderie and community pride to everybody. The Purple Woods Maple Festival, a seventeen-hectare sugar maple forest and open meadow is situated on the Oak Ridges Moraine. This festival takes place each month of March.

The city is the head office of General Motors Canada, a large-scale automotive company. It is in friendly rivalry with Windsor, Ontario, which houses the headquarters of Chrysler. The company is one of the major contributors to the technological development and capital investments of the city. Oshawa city even attracts immigrants from Europe who are great at trades. The southern part of the city is generally made up of industrial zones and compact housing for industrial personnel whilst the northern part has a suburban feel. Recent years is seeing the city grow rapidly, and the growth of land speculation in addition to rising property values have created an edge to the local financial system.
