Taylor Counterbalance Forklift

Getting Aboard the Forklift
One of the keys to keeping operators safe is the 3-point dismount. Even though this is often overlooked, it is a main problem in keeping operator's safe. For instance, a few years ago, at a lift truck rally, a participator perfectly executed the course at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so excited, that he jumped off of his machinery and completely forgot to make a 3-point dismount. He didn't win the competition because he judges ended up docking marks from his overall score.

The importance of dismounting and mounting forklifts is a very serious factor to be covered in training. Furthermore, having operators wear their seatbelts could really save their lives in the event of a tip-over. It is vital to know that if the center of gravity of a loaded forklift moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation could happen. Skilled operators seldom ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is extremely essential that they are ready for that possibility in case it happens.

Mounting and dismounting of forklifts is important for ensuring the operator stays safe. This is also essential even on low platform pallet jacks. There are way too many injuries sustained from utilizing these equipment. Some of the serious situations consist of: Driver's catching their coveralls or loose clothing while dismounting and could end up falling and breaking their back. Sometimes, the driver could sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a forklift. The driver could accidentally break an arm when falling and slipping off of the pallet jack. The operator could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris while they are still hanging onto the handhold with one hand.

Having 3 points of contact is vital when dismounting or mounting a lift truck in order to keep you safe. The 3 points can be obtained by 2 hands and 1 foot or by 1 hand and 2 feet. This stance is exactly like climbing up or down a ladder. Don't forget to face the machine at all times. Drivers usually tend to face away from the machine or to jump or hop off the machine and these mistakes greatly reduce the overall risk being injured.
